Employers added 147,000 private sector jobs last month, the slowest pace since May, Automatic Data Processing Ind. reported.

The increase in October was below expectations. Economists polled by Econoday had forecast an October gain of 170,000 jobs compared with the original estimate of 154,000 for September.

On Wednesday, ADP sharply revised its estimate for September job growth up to 202,000.

Analysts use ADP’s data to get a feeling for the Labor Department’s employment report, which will be released Friday and covers government jobs in addition to the private sector.
