There will be more Thanksgiving travelers on the road this year — and this is where they’re going

One thing travelers seem thankful for this holiday season: low gas prices.

Nearly 49 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving, according to the travel and roadside assistance company the American Automobile Association (AAA).

That’s an increase of 1 million travelers from a year ago, or a nearly 2% jump, and the most Thanksgiving travelers since 2007, which AAA’s President and Chief Executive Marshall Doney attributed to gas prices that are close to $2 a gallon as well as economic improvements in the second half of the year, including rising wages and higher consumer confidence.

The national average price of a gallon of gas is $2.16, up slightly from last year’s average price of $2.05 during Thanksgiving.
