We know student debt is delaying marriage — but why?

Over the next few months, thousands of couples will post pictures of themselves and new bling on social media. But if conventional wisdom is to be believed many other couples will put off formally committing because of their student loans.

Headlines and surveys periodically declare that high levels of student loan debt among today’s young people are keeping them from marrying. We’ve come to accept delayed marriage as a fact-of-life of the student debt crisis.

But the growth in student loan debt over the past several years raises the question as to why so many student loan borrowers continue to view their debt as an obstacle to marriage.
