The former Barrow, Alaska, lies on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

Barrow, Alaska, woke Thursday to darkness and a new name. Actually, Utqiaġvik is not so much a new name as merely different from the one the coastal municipality had Wednesday.

By late Thursday, however, the name change reportedly rested in a sort of legal limbo, challenged over the many costs associated with switching the name on official signage, stationery and the like — and also on the grounds that the old-new name was not even historically accurate.
