Domestic violence leaves hidden scars and financial ruin

After 10 years of physical and emotional abuse from her husband, 27-year-old Tiffany Williams was able to take her two children with her and escape for good this year. For the past six months, she has been living in an Urban Resource Institute domestic violence shelter in New York where she is finally out of his reach — but despite her escape, she remains trapped, not by her former partner but by the economic havoc he unleashed on her life.

Throughout their relationship, Williams said, her husband stole her cash, took her credit cards and ran up debt, opened new cards in her name, prevented her from keeping a steady job, and drained her bank account.
