The Wall Street Journal: Mistrial declared in case against police officer who fatally shot Walter Scott

The judge in the murder trial of former North Charleston, S.C., police officer Michael Slager declared a mistrial on Monday, after the jury said its members were hopelessly deadlocked.

The judge said he had no choice because the jury said it would never reach a consensus.

Slager was charged in the fatal shooting of unarmed black motorist Walter Scott after an April 2015 traffic stop. The shooting was captured on cellphone video, which showed Slager, who is white, shooting Scott repeatedly in the back as he ran away.

Slager pleaded not guilty, saying the shooting was in self-defense, as he feared for his life after fighting Scott for control of his police Taser.
