The Moneyologist: I want to pay for my stepchildren’s student loans — out of my own premarital assets

Dear Moneyologist,

I married a wonderful man two years ago. We each have two grown children, three of whom have graduated college with the youngest child graduating in a year and a half.

My ex-husband and I paid for our children’s education in full, without any scholarships or loans. My husband’s children carry about $25,000 each in student loans, which are they are struggling to repay. He believes that loans help children be more invested in their education. I don’t agree, and think good parents pay for the undergraduate degrees of their children.
