California orders Uber to stop driverless-car program in San Francisco

California regulators have ordered Uber Technologies Inc.’s day-old driverless-car pilot program in San Francisco to shut down.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles said Wednesday afternoon that Uber “must cease” operations immediately or face legal action because it does not have a permit to test autonomous vehicles, according to a letter sent to the company.

California’s DMV has issued autonomous-vehicle permits for testing on public roads to 20 companies, but Uber is not one of them. Uber maintains its cars are not truly autonomous because they require a human “driver” to monitor them.

“It is illegal for the company to operate its self-driving vehicles on public roads until it receives an autonomous vehicle testing permit,” DMV deputy director and chief counsel Brian Soublet said in the letter to Uber.
