Market Snapshot: Dow lurks below 20,000 as Wall Street anxiously awaits Fed decision

U.S. stocks tilted modestly lower Wednesday, with indexes maintaining a tight range as investors awaited the outcome of a meeting of Federal Reserve policy makers.

The Fed is widely expected to raise rates for the first time since last December, but Wall Street will watch for clues about the health of the economy and the pace of rate increases from the Fed’s statement at 2 p.m. Eastern and the news conference which follows, hosted by Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.17% fell 33 points, or 0.2%, to 19,878, while the S&P 500 SPX, -0.25% dipped 4 points, or 0.2%, at 2,267.
