3 ways to be less wasteful around the holidays

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, waste increases about 25%, or 1 million extra tons compared with the rest of the year in the U.S., according to California’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle). That includes about 38,000 miles of ribbon, enough to tie a bow around the entire Earth.

During Thanksgiving alone, Americans waste about $293 million worth of uneaten food — and that’s just counting turkey.

Packaging waste has come into focus recently, with some grocery stores in Europe even going completely packaging-free.

But for those who aren’t able to get rid of packaging completely, there are some easy ways to cut back, experts have said.
