London Markets: FTSE 100 heads for weekly win as banks take center stage

U.K. stocks were searching for firm direction Friday, as a flurry of U.S. Department of Justice settlement moves sent ripples through the bank sector.

The FTSE 100 UKX, +0.06% was down nearly 4 points to 7,059.90 but has swayed between small gains and losses. Barclays PLC stock lost ground after the lender pushed back against a DOJ suit, but Royal Bank of Scotland PLC shares rose.

Decliners included basic materials, financials, telecom and health care shares, but their moves were largely offset by gains for utility, tech, consumer and industrials. The index on Thursday closed up 0.3% at 7,063.68.
