Market Extra: Retail ETFs rise as early indications point to strong holiday shopping season

Exchange-traded funds that track the retail sector rose on Tuesday, as the first reads on the holiday shopping season indicated encouraging results.

The SPDR S&P Retail ETF XRT, +0.97% rose 1.4%, although trading was light, with under 350,000 shares traded, a fraction of its 30-day average of more than 5.7 million shares. The VanEck Vectors Retail ETF RTH, +0.51% rose 0.8%, though fewer than 3,000 shares exchanged hands on the day.

The light action is typical for the final trading week of the year; overall market volume was also running below averages.

Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, +1.42% the biggest online retailer, said it had shipped more than one billion items through Amazon Prime and Fulfillment by Amazon this holiday season.
