Outside the Box: A retaliatory hack is a risky way to respond to the Russian hack of the DNC

The U.S. intelligence community has leveled electrifying and specific charges against Russia for hacking the Democratic National Committee in order to influence our presidential election. Hacking the DNC among other political entities raises serious questions about the extent of Russian intervention in the U.S. democratic process. The question the U.S. is wrestling with is what is an appropriate response to this attack?

The Obama administration’s position to date has been the U.S. will take proportionate action at the time and place of its choosing. This stance is similar to what it espoused following North Korea’s attack against Sony Picture’s Entertainment in 2014.
