London Markets: Miners lift FTSE 100 in thin post-holidays trade

U.K. stocks inched higher on Wednesday, with miners pushing the benchmark index into positive territory in thin trade on the first trading day in London after the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays.

After a trading break on Monday and Tuesday, the FTSE 100 index UKX, +0.25% on Wednesday rose 0.2% to 7,085.09. With only three trading days left in 2016, the FTSE is set for a 13% yearly gain.

Miners helped lift the index, boosted by rising commodity prices and tracking gains for the sector in Australia. The S&P ASX 200 index XJO, +1.01% , Australia’s benchmark stock index, closed at its highest level since August 2015.
