Market Extra: European breakdown? Why the continent’s stocks are actually set for a solid 2017

For European stock investors, 2016 turned out to be nothing like what strategists had promised at the beginning of the year.

Brexit happened and sent shivers through the markets for a while. The banking sector crumbled under negative interest rates. And the much-hoped-for earnings growth failed to appear.

Against that backdrop and faced with rising populism, terrorism and elections in Germany and France, investors could easily be forgiven for turning their back on the region in the new year.

But they shouldn’t, according to strategists. European equities look set for a solid 2017 as the continent’s stock markets start to catch up with the region’s economic recovery.
