Caroline Baum: It’s President Trump versus candidate Trump on the big issues

The year 2016 was dominated by politics, or upended by politics as it turned out.

The expected coronation of Democrat Hillary Clinton as the first female president of the United States was abruptly canceled as Donald Trump, a brash newcomer to politics with no preconceived notion of presidential etiquette, swayed discontented voters with promises to Make America Great Again.

Over the next four years, Trump will be held to account for his promises. No, a president doesn’t bear sole responsibility for the fate of the nation, but a president succeeds or fails based on perceptions. With Republicans in control of both the executive and the legislative branches of government, the onus is on Trump to deliver, especially when it comes to strong, broad-based economic growth.
