Weekend Sip: Boozy seltzer is now a thing

The can:Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer, $8.99 for a six-pack

The back story: Looking for a low-calorie drinking option in the new year? The folks at Smirnoff think they have a solution. The brand, part of liquor giant Diageo, has rolled out this boozy seltzer — with 90 calories per can (and just 1 gram of carbs) — in flavors that include watermelon, orange mango and cranberry lime.

Essentially, this is a sip that belongs in the category of what’s known as flavored malt beverages (aka alcopop), the same category that includes wine coolers and such other generally sweet fare as Mike’s Hard Lemonade and Bud Light Lime-a-Rita.
