Europe Markets: European stocks fall after downbeat updates from Lufthansa, others

European stocks lost altitude on Monday, with Deutsche Lufthansa AG, William Hill PLC and Fresenius among the biggest losers after each company gave a discouraging update on its business.

The Stoxx Europe 600 SXXP, -0.61% dropped 0.5% to 363.75.

On Friday, the pan-European benchmark ended 0.1% lower at 365.45, but still scored a weekly gain of 1.1% after entering bull-market territory on Tuesday.

Movers: Lufthansa’s stock LHA, -5.66% fell 5%, after the German airline said late Friday that fuel costs will rise this year and failed to provide an earnings forecast for 2017. Brokerage Goodbody described the carrier’s release as an “underwhelming update.
