The Moneyologist: My in-laws want me to buy half of their home — should I do it?

Dear Moneyologist,

My partner and I have been together for a little over five years now. We both bought homes in the same general area in Dallas just before we met. Basically we started living together in his house about three years ago, while I maintained my property during that time.

Because it was becoming taxing and stressful to keep my property while living in his, I recently sold my home, and realized a substantial profit over my purchase price (less real-estate fees) of about $80,000. With the existing equity I received a check for about $130,000 at closing.
