Defined as “an exceedingly disastrous or chaotic situation,” dumpster fire says a lot about 2016’s unprecedented presidential campaign and election.

That’s what the American Dialect Society thinks. They’ve picked the expression as their word of the year.

Sure, this year’s selection is actually two words, the group concedes, but in recent years, even hashtags and emojis have been contenders. Regardless, any winner must have been newly prominent over the past year and must reflect public preoccupations in some way.
