Auto makers team up to rival Apple and Google

A battle of formats is nothing new in the electronics or the automotive industry, and the latest is a bit of both as Apple AAPL, -0.18% and Google GOOG, +0.19% have come to dominate the platforms for in-car apps.

Now Ford, F, +0.32% Toyota, TM, +0.14% Peugeot-Citroen, Suzuki, SZKMF, +3.94%Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries FUJHY, +0.29% and a group of suppliers want to change that by offering an open-source software platform to give users more choice in how they connect and use smartphone apps in their vehicles.
