Economic Preview: ‘The more boring, the better’ — what to watch from the ECB today

After the European Central Bank’s December surprise, economists are expecting this month’s policy meeting will be a snoozer — and that would be a good thing.

The ECB will hold its first policy setting meeting of 2017 on Thursday, after extending its easing program by longer than expected last month. Now European inflation is rising sharply, and Germany is calling for the bank to bring its ultra-accommodative bond buying to an end.

With those pressures on the ECB in mind, investors are looking for one thing from President Mario Draghi and Co. at this week’s meeting: Confirmation that the bank’s quantitative easing will carry on as planned.
