The Wall Street Journal: ‘Hidden Figures’ is a hit, and keeps defying odds at every step

LOS ANGELES — “Hidden Figures” is having no trouble making itself known at the box office.

The PG-rated true-life drama, about a trio of brilliant African-American women who worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration during the age of the Space Race and Jim Crow, has collected $84.2 million since expanding to wide release. The Twentieth Century Fox FOX, +1.16% movie collected a strong $22.8 million during its first weekend in wide release in the U.S. and Canada, but has received even more attention in Hollywood for its second- and third-weekend grosses, which have fallen only 8.5% and 22%, respectively.
