The Sniff Test: GE and IBM have ‘unusual’ earnings reports in common

General Electric Co. and International Business Machines Corp. have something in common that is quite rare among public companies that report quarterly results: Both companies’ financial statements list diluted earnings per share above basic earnings per share.

Among the 30 components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.27% , Walt Disney Co. DIS, -0.54% is the only other that reports EPS in that way.

The companies are not doing anything technically wrong, and they have been doing it for years, but one industry expert said hey are doing something and that fact raises the question of why.
