Earnings Outlook: Intel earnings: Holiday PC sales could save the quarter

When Intel Corp. reports earnings Thursday afternoon, it may be saved by a business it is trying to get away from, again.

Analysts expect that a stronger than expected holiday season for sales of personal computers could boost the world’s largest chip maker in its fourth-quarter earnings report. While the PC business still accounts for the majority of Intel’s revenue, Chief Executive Brian Krzanich has been restructuring the company with a focus on newer technologies like cloud data centers and the Internet of Things.

Intel INTC, +0.48% has struggled in that effort, however, with growth in cloud-server sales disappointing investors and restructuring charges and changes continuing to grow, and surprise growth in the PC group already rescued the company more than once in 2016.
