Market Snapshot: Stock market finishes weaker as investors turn skittish

Wall Street stocks closed lower on Monday as the S&P 500 snapped a three-day winning streak after mixed earnings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.09% fell 19.04 points to end at 20,052.42 as gains for United Technologies Corp. UTX, +0.94% were offset by losses for Verizon Communications Inc.VZ, -1.13% shares.

The S&P 500 SPX, -0.21% shed 4.86 points, or 0.2%, to close at 2,292.56, with energy and telecommunications sectors leading the losses. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.06% slipped 3.21 points to finish at 5,663.55.

“Today’s trading resembles a pause after a rally, since there isn’t big news that would drive the market either way,” said Diane Jaffee, senior portfolio manager at TCW.
