New England Patriots are a beacon of hope for stock market bears

“Just remember, once you’re over the hill, you begin to pick up speed.” — Arthur Schopenhauer

I’m not a football fan, but given the hype over Sunday night’s Super Bowl game, I had to watch. And I’m glad I did, because the way the New England Patriots came back to win is a reminder of why stock market bulls haven’t won the game just yet.

The big game was emblematic of how markets work. The Atlanta Falcons dominated the first three quarters of the game, and it was about to be a blowout until the fourth quarter. And then the odds changed: The chance of the Falcons winning went into a 1987-style stock market crash.
