MarketWatch employees reveal their budgeting secrets

Whether it’s because of “lifestyle creep,” disorganization or debt that never seems to get any smaller, Americans struggle to save much of their income.

Nearly half of U.S. adults don’t have even $400 saved that they could use in an emergency, according to the Federal Reserve.

Could the issue be that most people have no idea how to budget?

About a dozen fellow MarketWatch employees told me what tools they actually use to budget. One of the most surprising findings: At least eight of us, despite writing about business and finance, fall into the two-thirds of adults who don’t write out a budget at all.
