The dollar traded mostly higher on Friday, notably strengthening against the British pound, which tumbled after an unexpected fall in retail sales, but weakening versus the yen ahead of the long holiday weekend.

The ICE U.S. Dollar Index DXY, +0.14% , which gauges the buck against a basket of six rivals, rose 0.2% to 100.66. The WSJ Dollar Index BUXX, +0.14% , a measure of the dollar against 16 major currencies, rose 0.1% to 90.90.

In a surprise drop, U.K. retail sales fell 0.3% in January, missing forecasts for a gain. The pound GBPUSD, -0.4885% slid to $1.2414 from $1.2494 late Thursday.
