Weekend Sip: For Mardi Gras, try this rum that was born on the Bayou

The bottle:Bayou Select Rum, $30

The back story: We’re coming up on Mardi Gras, which means it’s time to celebrate all things Louisiana. As in Creole cuisine. And chicory coffee. And…rum?

While we tend to think of rum as a Caribbean or South/Central American thing, there’s a rich tradition of rum-making in Louisiana — at least in the 18th and 19th centuries. It makes sense given that the state is a major hub for sugar production, with some 400,000 acres set aside for growing sugar cane. (Rum is made from molasses, a sugar byproduct.) But it’s only been in the last few years that craft distillers in the state have started making rum and brought the tradition full circle.
