This 13-year-old is inspiring girls to dream big with Oscar-nominated ‘Hidden Figures’

Taylor Richardson wants to be an astronaut. She’s wanted to since reading a book about Dr. Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut, in first grade. And after a screening of the Oscar-nominated “Hidden Figures,” Richardson, 13, was inspired to show other young girls they too can reach for the stars.

“Hidden Figures,” released by 20th Century Fox FOXA, +0.89% in December, tells the story of NASA’s unsung heroes: The group of black female mathematicians and engineers who helped launch astronaut John Glenn into orbit, spurring the U.S. to win the space race. The film focuses on real-life figures Katherine Johnson, played by Taraji P.
