The Moneyologist: This man was offered a job, but his wife said she’ll divorce him if they lose their government assistance

Dear Moneyologist,

My father and mother, who are 71 and 67, have been receiving Medicare and Medicaid benefits from the government for past five years. They are considered a low-income family and reside in a small one-bedroom in a senior housing unit in New Jersey paying $200 per month. They also receive food stamps, every month in the amount of $130 or so.

‘My father received a letter from a company stating that he would start off as a train inspector and would be paid $30.50 an hour. My mother suddenly started protesting strongly. She threatens to divorce my father should he choose to accept the job offer.
