Ben Carson, the newly confirmed secretary of Housing and Urban Development, on Monday met his charges for the first time — and didn’t discuss housing.

The retired neurosurgeon talked at length about the human brain and gave a pep talk about how America needs to be a “can-do” society. Carson, who has his own exhibit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, may get the most attention for his comments on slavery:

‘That’s what America is about. A land of dreams and opportunity. There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less.
