What we can learn from Chrissy Teigen’s battle with postpartum depression

Chrissy Teigen announced in an Instagram post and accompanying essay in Glamour magazine Monday that she has something that 1 in 9 of women has also experienced: postpartum depression.

The condition, also referred to as perinatal mood disorder, can start during pregnancy and is characterized by depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts and other mental and physical symptoms. Teigen, 31, said the illness left her exhausted, sad and in physical pain much of the time. It started when the model and actress gave birth to her daughter with singer John Legend in April. However, she did not finally start getting treatment until December.
