Asia Markets: Asian markets dip lower, awaiting Fed news

Asian shares were broadly lower Wednesday, tracking losses in the U.S., as the market cautiously awaited a decision on interest rates by the Federal Reserve.

In keeping with the theme of quiet anticipation that has dominated markets for much of the week, selling was modest ahead of the conclusion of the two-day Federal Open Market Committee meeting later in the global trading day.

The Nikkei Stock Average NIK, -0.20% was 0.4% lower in morning trade, sticking within a narrow 53-point range. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 XJO, +0.26% ticked down 0.3%, led by declines in its financial sector. In China, the Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, -0.13% fell 0.3%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index HSI, -0.06% was 0.6% lower.
