Forget what percent of Americans are very confident or not very confident about enjoying their retirement. Focus instead on what you can do to live comfortably in retirement.

First, calculate how much money you’ll need saved in your nest egg to fund – in addition to Social Security and other possible sources of income – your retirement.

“Once people have a goal they report more confidence and have accumulated more assets,” says Craig Copeland, a senior research associate with the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI), which in partnership with Greenwald & Associates, published the 2017 Retirement Confidence Survey (RCS), the longest running survey of its kind.
