Facebook crowdfunding launch could boost its only declining business

Facebook Inc.’s new platform may help boost its only flailing segment.

The social media platform announced the launch of a crowdfunding offering Thursday in which users can create campaigns and donate to personal fundraisers. Revenue from this would presumably be counted toward its payment and fees segment, which has seen declining revenues for the past two quarters; Facebook did not immediately respond to an email seeking clarification on classification of crowdfunding revenue.

Facebook FB, -0.25% saw revenue in that segment drop to $180 million in the fourth quarter of 2016 from $195 million in the previous quarter and $197 million in the second quarter.
