What Uber drivers can teach America about work-life balance

Uber drivers have loudly criticized the company’s low fare policies. But there’s also a lot about their job that corporate American could learn from.

While drivers at Uber face many drawbacks such as dealing with members of the public at all times of the day and night, they benefit significantly from a flexible schedule, earning more than twice the surplus they would in less flexible arrangements, according to a new paper circulated by the National Bureau of Economic Research, a Washington, D.C.-based research group. “If required to supply labor inflexibly at prevailing wages, they would also reduce the hours they supply by more than two-thirds,” the paper concluded.
