MarketWatch First Take: PC companies must sell to businesses or die, but what about Apple?

Personal computer makers not involved in the corporate market are likely to face consolidation or some other form of death, as consumers are dramatically slowing their purchases of PCs.

That was one of the more interesting comments from analysts in the quarterly PC shipments data by market research firms Gartner Inc. and International Data Corp. The two firms did not agree on whether overall shipments declined or grew in the quarter, with IDC seeing very slight or flat growth and Gartner tracking a slight decline.

But both firms agreed that the corporate upgrade cycle is the real driver of growth going forward, as consumers depend on phones and tablets while letting their PCs grow old before replacing them.
