Facebook’s AR Studio could kill a core Snap ad product

Facebook Inc. announced a new camera-based augmented-reality platform Tuesday that closely resembles the interactive filters seen on Snapchat. But Facebook has one advantage Snap Inc. does not: a new studio that lets brands design their own filters — for free.

AR Studio is a new Mac app in the Facebook FB, -0.33% suite of products — available Tuesday in closed beta — that lets users design, build and implement their own unique augmented-reality effects. These can include a wide range of things, from customized masks to “experiences,” such as arrows, confetti and other graphics that can move around on the screen and interact with users.
