Market Extra: French election relief lays ground for ECB tapering — but not yet

With fears France’s presidential election could produce a nightmare scenario for financial markets almost put to rest, attention now shifts to the other big event this week: The European Central Bank policy meeting on Thursday.

While the central bank has vowed to keep monetary policy extremely loose until at least the end of the year, investors are already speculating when the first hints of future tightening will come and exactly what that move will look like. Will rates go up before the quantitative easing program comes to an end? Could it happen as soon as December? And when will the policy makers begin tapering their asset purchases?
