The Wall Street Journal: Russian spy ship sinks after collision with Turkish freighter

MOSCOW — A Russian military reconnaissance ship sank Thursday in the Black Sea following a collision with a cargo ship, an incident that underscores the generally tired state of the Russian navy.

All crew on board the ship were rescued before it sank. The Turkish military said in a statement 78 Russian crew members were on the boat.

“The crew of the Black Sea Fleet’s reconnaissance ship ‘Liman’ are all accounted for, alive, healthy and are currently preparing to leave a Turkish rescue ship for a Russian military ship,” Interfax reported a statement from the Defense Ministry as saying.

Turkey’s Anadolu news agency said the cargo ship that hit the Liman was carrying livestock.
