Key Words: Inside the executive order that would’ve yanked the U.S. out of Nafta

The Financial Times has obtained and published what it’s reporting is the text of the executive order President Trump had planned to sign this weekend announcing the withdrawal of the U.S. from the North American Free Trade Agreement, before his eleventh-hour change of heart. With characteristic brevity, the order says the Trump administration has made it its policy “to renegotiate, or withdraw from, every trade agreement that does not serve the interests of the United States.”

To survive scrutiny, a trade pact, according to the order, would need to put in place multilateral mercantile conditions that are free, fair and reciprocal, bolstering U.S.
