Obama urges Congress to have the courage to preserve health care

In his first public comments since the House voted last week to repeal his signature law, former President Barack Obama urged Congress to have the courage to maintain America’s health-care system during a speech Sunday night.

Obama spoke in Boston after receiving the annual John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, was the former president’s signature piece of public policy, and the target of Republican ire for the past seven years.

Obama praised Democratic lawmakers who helped pass the Affordable Care Act in 2010 and later lost their seats because of it, for having the courage to risk their political careers.
