Major cyberattack paralyzes U.K. health facilities — why your hospital could be next

Imagine speeding to the hospital in an ambulance, only to be redirected mid-journey to a different location due to a hostage situation there — not involving people, but the hospital’s computer system. Or what if you get a letter saying you’ve had a major operation that you have absolutely no memory of?

Chances are you (or your hospital) have been the victim of a cyberattack.

Such was the case on Friday, after 16 hospitals in England were affected by a major cyberattack, along with dozens of countries around the world, including the U.S., Russia, Ukraine, Taiwan and Spain. The facilities were forced to cancel appointments and turn away patients after their computer systems were completely frozen.
