Young, married women should learn this skill

Talking to your spouse about money and knowing the in’s and out’s of family accounts can seem tedious, stressful and unromantic, yet it becomes more important with every passing day. Especially for women.

Wives aren’t always involved in family finances, experts said, which is a problem at every stage of life but increasingly so when they age — some 80% of men die married but 80% of women die single, according to the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement, which means they command their own money management.

“All you have to do is go to an assisted living facility and you’ll see maybe five guys and 50 women,” said Shannon Holland, a financial adviser and associate vice president of investments at Raymond James in Naples, Fla.
