Key Words: Clapper: American institutions under assault externally and at Trump’s hands

James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence, was asked on a Sunday news show about his name’s being invoked on Twitter by President Donald Trump as having cleared the president of any Russian collusion in the run-up to his November election.

Clapper, appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” broke sharply with the tweet’s assessment, describing it as not inconsistent that the Federal Bureau of Investigation would be pursuing that very matter without his involvement or knowledge. “The bottom line,” he said, “is I don’t know if there was collusion, political collusion.”

“I think in many ways our institutions are under assault,” Clapper said, as the interview continued.
