The Wall Street Journal: Box office for newest ‘Alien’ installment isn’t exactly out of this world

Ridley Scott’s “Alien” series came down to Earth at the box office this weekend, with the latest installment opening to a so-so $36 million, according to preliminary estimates.

That was enough for “Alien: Covenant” to eke out a first-place finish, though it is about 29% lower than the debut of “Prometheus,” the series’ 2012 installment, which opened to $51 million. The new release barely bested Walt Disney Co. DIS, +0.20% holdover “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which added $35.1 million for a three-week total of $301.8 million.

“Everything, Everything,” an inexpensive young-adult romance from Time Warner Inc.’s TWX, +0.22% Warner Bros.
