Why Trump’s proposal to slash Medicaid disproportionately impacts women

Cuts to Medicaid could be bad news for women.

The budget President Donald Trump proposed Tuesday, which would cut federal spending by $4.5 trillion over the next decade, includes more than $600 billion in cuts to Medicaid, a federal and state program that supports care for the poor. Doing so would particularly present challenges to women, who live longer, access more reproductive services and are more likely to be care givers to elderly family members or children, experts have said.

There are two parts of the proposed budget that could lead to cuts for Medicaid, said Marc Goldwein, a senior vice president at the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C.
