Therese Poletti’s Tech Tales: ‘Twin Peaks’ meets tech and—surprise!—it’s weird

When viewers of the original TV show “Twin Peaks” were first introduced to FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper in 1990, as he investigated a murder in a small town a few miles from the Canadian border, one of the very few nods to technology was his ubiquitous 1980s-era voice-activated tape recorder.

The series, created by director David Lynch and writer Mark Frost, ran for two seasons in 1990 and 1991, an era that now looks blissfully tech-free. It was the early days of the World Wide Web, CompuServe bulletin boards were popular for online chat and there were no smartphones or social media.
